Dudley Moore: An Intimate Portrait
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.00 $Rena Fruchter was Dudley's concert piano partner, and the friend who looked after him in the final years of his life, until his death at the age of 66. This is her intimate portrait of the extraordinarily brilliant, complex character that was Dudley Moore. During the last ten years of his life Dudley changed. He stepped off the podium and into real life. Physically life was difficult, professionally it was turbulent, but during his final years he blossomed and in the midst of his illness from the debilitating effects of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, he found peace. Rena writes beautifully of Dudley's final years but also take us back through his life story - conveying his inimitable talent, humour and vibrancy, and evoking the atmosphere of a working class upbringing in Forties Britain, life in Fifties London and his relationship with Peter Cook and the excesses of Eighties LA. Dudley Moore: An Intimate Portrait
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.22 $The public persona of Dudley Moore was many-sided: the short, anxious member of the comic duo Pete and Dud; the hard-drinking millionaire in the phenomenally successful Arthur; the gifted concert pianist and composer; the working-class kid who won a scholarship to Oxford. His life spanned an era of brilliant British comedy and an extraordinary decade of success—and excess—in Hollywood. After a debilitating illness forced him off the stage into real life, he struggled to survive; paradoxically, he also found inner peace. Looking back on the final 15 years of his life, Rena Fruchter gives us a loving and unflinching portrait of her friend Dudley Moore.

The Authorized Biography of Dudley Moore
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 59.00 $To millions everywhere, Dudley Moore is a diminutive sex symbol, the charming clown of Arthur, an inspired jazz pianist or a member of the legendary Beyond the Fringe satirists. He is all these things but he is also a deeply troubled man whose life has been haunted - and damaged - by his neuroses.Written with Moore's full co-operation, Barbra Paskin's biography is the first book to examine every side of this complex man and his candour has enabled her to write a rivetingly detailed and revealing book.Born with a twisted foot and a slightly withered leg that no amount of corrective surgery could mend, Moore never felt he had his mother's love, yet to this day he seeks her approval, three broken marriages down the line.Moore's career at Cambridge and his spectacular rise to early fame with Alan Bennett, Jonathan Miller and Peter Cook are re-examined, as is his later partnership with Cook and their volatile friendship. His depressive, occasionally violent, side affected all four of his marriages and tempered his film work. 10 made him a Hollywood star and Arthur gilded that success. Then came other films which were somehow unworthy of his talents.

Songs Without Words (PVG)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.37 $The official album-matching songbook to Dudley Moore's 1991 album, Songs Without Words, featuring accurate piano solo transcriptions of all the pieces. Dudley Moore was one of the most beloved and respected artists of our time. Actor, comedian, pianist, composer, conductor, and vocalist, he was renowned for his work in all these areas. Best known to the public for his leading roles in smash hits such as Arthur, Foul Play, and Unfaithfully Yours, he was internationally loved by his audiences. Nevertheless, Dudley's first love was music. A highly-trained classical musician, he studied violin and organ at the Guildhall School of Music in London and later attended Magdalen College at Oxford University as an organ scholar, also studying composition. In his teens, he was inspired by jazz pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson, and went on to spend many years recording and performing internationally with his own jazz trio. A highly personal collection, Songs Without Words also includes his tribute to composers Tchaikovsky (Thank you, Ilyich) and Satie; a piece dedicated to his son Patrick; and others reflecting his own whimsical play on language. The thirteen pieces share a melancholy and pensive feeling typical of Moore's compositional style. These are, however, challenging pieces, suitable for the advanced pianist. Steve Law's transcriptions were taken from Dudley Moore's recordings. A British composer and arranger, Law studied music at Bristol University and received a Master's degree for his jazz opera Heaven on Earth. In 1998, Law dedicated a piano transcription of Moore's music from the film Bedazzled, and sent the unsolicited score to him, who was so impressed that he invited the young composer to meet with him in London. Law's transcriptions retain the integrity of Moore's rich melodic line, lush expressive harmony and jazz-like improvisation.

So Farewell Then: The Untold Life of Peter Cook
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 59.00 $Caustic and cruel but effortlessly witty, Peter Cook was one of the most significant influences on British comedy in the last half-century as well as one of the prime architects of the satire boom of the 1960s. He achieved fame through the comedy sketch show Not Only But Also, where he starred alongside Dudley Moore. While the responsibility of being regarded as a comic guru could have weighed heavily upon his shoulders, the one thing Peter always refused adamantly was to take himself or his career seriously. Wendy E. Cook met Peter in the early 1960s; they soon married, and they lived together during the most explosive time in Peter's amazing career. But as Peter fell deeper into drinking, Wendy eventually moved away with their children, and later divorced her husband. Now, more than 30 years after their separation and more than a decade after his death, Wendy has broken her long silence. This is her take on the Peter Cook few have seen, and the life of one of Britain’s most noted comedic geniuses.
